Banner Elk Area
We’ve found “homes” for the Summer classes in the Mountains. A friend has offered to open her beautiful bit of Tuscany - in Banner Elk -; and another friend with a small horse farm 1/2 hr south of Banner Elk for the summer/fall workshops.
Both are beautiful locations.

Leaves in Gouache Register
Whether green and flexible; dressed in the rich colors of fall; or curled and dry the many shapes and textures of leaves are found throughout the decorative arts. We’ll explore how to draw and paint them to float above the page.

Art Supplies: Online at Jerry's Artarama is least costly. They have a retail shop at 3060 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.
Notes: The Raleigh classes are conducted in my studio/home and are usually indoors, seated at tables. There is a large dog but friendly Katie dog at the Raleigh Studio. We start with coffee about 9:30, a demonstration at 10, and paint/draw until lunch. After the lunch break, we paint until about 4 pm. The environment is light-filled,peaceful and welcoming. Outside the windows flows a stream, coming from the woods that surround the yard. Birds frequent the feeders at the deck. You'll be asked to bring your own lunch. I'll provide coffee, iced tea, and fruit (sometimes cookies...). Come spend a wonderful day exploring the process of creating art - it's fun, (and non-judgmental), and rewarding. Students, even those who claim they could never paint, walk away with something worth framing. (One such "I'll never be able to paint" student wrote a coffee order on the back of her painting of a butterfly. When she went to order all of the coffees, the painting was noticed and praised so thoroughly by those in the cafe that she had to reconsider her conclusion.)

Animals in Gouache Register
I’ve had a number of requests for a class to learn to draw and paint animals. This fall, I worked with a student on a horse portrait – which she finished so beautifully. To take this class, there will be some pre-class homework, but if you’d like to paint your favorite companion, this 3-day class would be a great start. Please call me.
February 27–28, 2010; 10 am
Butterflies and Moths in Gouache Register
Learn to render the incredible variety of Nature’s painted beauties. Working from real specimens, this is one of my most popular classes. Those who want another chance to explore these winsome characters can choose to turn the images into an illuminated letter or card.
March 13–14, 2010; 10 am
Painting Shells on a beach Register
Learn to paint shells with their considerable range of tints, textures and shapes – and turn your images into gift or greeting cards and/or learn how to paint a sandy shoreline with your shells scattered across it.
April 24–25, 2010; 10 am
Illuminated letters in Gouache Register
Find a wonderful letter in my collection of calligraphy and alphabet books, and paint it in combination with a bird or butterfly or a dog or??? The letters can be baroque, Celtic, contemporary or whimsical – the available choices seem endless – and the finished product always worth framing
May 15–16, 2010; 10 am
Painting Feathers Register
Learn to create the textures and markings of feathers from the smooth translucence of the quill, the fluffy textures at the body of the bird to the smooth controlled rhythm of the outer feathers. Great images for bookmarks and cards.
June 19–20, 2010; 10 am
Painting birds in Gouache and Watercolor Register
If I can get samples from on of the local Natural History Museums, I will. If not, we’ll find models in the extensive library of reference books here at the studio. Birds are fascinating subjects whether at rest or in flight – and are found in all of the colors of the rainbow. I’ve worked with actual specimens and reference materials, using them in my porcelain designs; the Susan Koman box for Halcyon Days; on embroidered linens and as part of my first illuminated letter – Obviously a favorite subject.
July 10–11, 2010; 9:30 am
Painting a bird’s nest – with eggs! Register
Sounds soooo challenging? It is – but very rewarding for beginners as well as more advanced students. I’ll show you the step-by-step method I learned from – and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish (I know I was the first time I tried it!) You’ll learn how to create texture and the illusion of 3 dimensions – all in paint – Great fun!
September 11–12, 2010; 10 am
Flowers in Gouache and Watercolor Register
We’ll explore the multitude of colors, shapes and textures found in our gardens. I’m researching whether we can visit a local nursery and treat this class as a journaling class, too. I’ll keep you posted.
